The German art historian Roland Krischel has devoted a detailed study to the possible influence of Dante’s infernal “funnel” on the design of the Anatomical Theatre of Padua, built between 1592 and 1594 in Palazzo del Bo. Krischel also makes the bold suggestion that Galileo may have had a role in the design of the Theatre, based on his friendship with the anatomist Girolamo Fabrici d’Acquapendente and with the prelate Paolo Sarpi, who were both involved in the project. Although evidence for the link between Galileo and the design of the Anatomical Theatre is actually extremely weak and based entirely on clues, Krischel’s seductive yet disconcerting thesis demonstrates the lasting appeal of Dante’s architectonic imagination.
