This figure, with the body of a Greek god and diabolical features, formed a pair with an Archangel Michael (now lost) in a group embodying the fight between Good and Evil. In post-Tridentine Europe, the devil was no longer the slightly ridiculous, malicious spirit of the Middle Ages, but a figure with a terrifying power over humans. An increasingly intrusive Christianity began to impose the idea of a universe subjugated to the devastating might of Satan, who unleashed plagues decimating populations, exploited female beauty to induce men to sin, entered the bodies of heretics and witches, and tempted hermits.
