From Molfetta to Bisceglie
The Cammìno dèlle Tòrri e dei Fàri di Pùglia is an ongoing reality
The Cammìno dèlle Tòrri e dei Fàri di Pùglia is an ongoing reality. The place where you find yourself coincides with one of the most interesting sections of the ancient Vìa Francìgena, a European route that, in its southern branch, used to take pilgrims from Rome to Sànta Marìa di Lèuca; there, they would embark for the Holy Land. It's worth noting that in Pùglia, the Vìa Francìgena splits into two branches that reunite in Bàri. It then continues on to Brìndisi, Òtranto, and finally Lèuca.
However, there is also another, very ancient route that intersected Molfétta and Biscèglie, and which you are currently on. This is the "Vìa Litorànea," which connected Manfredònia to Bàri. For anyone who wants to walk it today, they can't help but notice the visual continuity of medieval town centers in white stone.
Conceiving Pùglia as a network of paths is, of course, a way to discover charming villages and cities of art. But, at a deeper level, it's also a way to truly understand what is meant by the expression "Pùglia as a meeting point between East and West." The Vìa Francìgena, the Litorànea, as well as the Vìa Traiàna, which connected Canòsa to Bàri, and the Materàno trail, still lead to direct encounters with a culture essentially based on synthesis and mediation.
The next time you return to Pùglia, the sensation of being on a path that truly connects places and memories will be even stronger.
