The Tower
Torre San Giovanni is the only octagonal coastal tower in Pùglia.
To contextualize the history and role of Torre San Giovanni, it is first necessary to consider that, at least from 500 BC, this was the port of Ugènto, overlooking a natural harbor. This can still be seen by looking at maps from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, which show a lagoon and a coastal canal, which were later filled in.
Therefore, Torre San Giovanni is located at a strategic point, the oldest in the defensive system of the ancient port of Ugènto.
The current building was constructed in 1565. The decision to build here was probably made by Viceroy Pietro Afàn de Ribèra. The actual coordination of the work was carried out by the Count of Ugènto, and the physical labor was performed by 150 workers.
Tórre Sàn Giovànni is the only octagonal coastal tower in Pùglia, and it is also the best-preserved one in the Ionian part of Salènto. At its base, it houses a cistern, also octagonal.
